Constraint Applications in Networks

Some of the earliest examples for CLP(R) were for analysing analog circuits, whose behavior can be described by Ohm’s law for the relation between resistance, voltage and current and Kirchhoff’s laws which defines how connected circuits behave. This early analysis later was extended to more complex, hybrid networks. One of the most interesting practical problems in this domain is the configuration of electrical power distribution networks (section 1), which has been studied with different constraint techniques and for which operational systems exist. The work on CP models for electrical power distribution networks later led to the study of water distribution networks (section 2), which have similar importance in the utilities area. Water networks differ from electrical networks in a number of fundamental ways:
